Central to the lab is the titanium:sapphire laser, consisting of an oscillator and a regenerative amplifier. This laser produces 100 fs pulses that are used in all the projects in this lab. We convert the laser pulses to a wide variety of wavelengths with the optical parametric amplifier (OPA). The ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber is used to probe the physics of chemical reactions in the Femtosecond Surface Science project. In the Microexplosions Section we investigate the physics of femtosecond pulse laser interaction with dielectrics. Exciting experiments on a new type of silicon are performed at the Black Silicon Section.

Panoramic view 1 This perspective gives you a view of the laser. You can also see the experimental setups for the Microexplosions project and the Black Silicon.

Panoramic view 2 (current view) From here you can get a good look at the titanium:sapphire laser. It takes up an entire optical table. The ultra-high vacuum chamber is the foiled-covered ball. All our experiments are done on the optical tables.
